January 21st, 2010 by katie What’s your Favorite ‘Last Dance’ Song?

Our Live Streaming Salsa was great last night but as we neared towards the end of the night, a question arose. What is the best last dance song?

You may have noticed we ended the night with Suavemente and then played some N.E.R.D. “Sooner or Later” – awesome song. But what’s the crowd favorite for a closing song? It can be anything really just has to make the night right!

What’s your favorite song to hear at the end of the night?

January 10th, 2010 by katie Salsa y Salsa at Gonzales y Gonzales

Cholo Rivera & His Charanga Blues 1Ian and I decided to take a little break from all the family fun this holiday and go to a Salsa club. We were visiting my family in New York and lucky for us that is the mothership of salsa dancing. Although we knew of a few places that we have heard of through the grapevine and from our many trips to New York, I decided to try something a little different. I typed Salsa in New York into Google and picked any random club I found.

Gonzalez y Gonzalez was the lucky winner we decided on. I was pretty confident that I would find a good salsa club no matter where in Manhattan we ended up so leaving it up to the fates ( and the probability of a Google search) seemed like the best idea. Luckily we had a second party who had been there once before and vouched for it.

In this case, it worked! Gonzalez y Gonzalez 625 Broadway, New York, NY 10012-2611 (Map below) between Houston and Bleecker St., was a great place for some social salsa. The DJ played a great mix of bachata, reggaeton, and merengue. But the main event of course was the Salsa band Cholo Rivera & His Charanga Blues. (more…)

September 17th, 2009 by Ian ILS’s Weekly Salsa Lessons!!

If you haven’t yet found them while surfing our site, we would like to formally invite you to Our Weekly Salsa Lessons with ILS. Every week we will be posting a quick recap of what we taught at our weekly salsa lessons. This will include a brief guide to each move and then a demonstration. These videos are intended to give you a little quick fix of salsa for anyone wanting a new routine. If you were at these classes then this is a good time to practice and revisit what you learned. These videos will predominantly be at the intermediate (sometimes advanced) level. If you are looking for beginner moves check out our lessons page. A special thanks to all of our students during these weekly lessons. You guys rock!

Barbara, one of our instructors and camera-person extraordinaire, walked around and recorded an excerpt of each of our groups. In this video Katie, Ian (me!), George, and Malcolm are teaching various groups split up between levels of ability. BTW, they are also my band mates in AudioImagery.net. Yeah… we’re rockstars!

August 11th, 2009 by Ian Top Ten Tips for Practicing Salsa

beagle dog salsa awesome wink dance coolYou may be thinking going to Salsa class once a week for an hour is enough right. I mean I also go to the club once a week, so I’m getting better. Right?

Well….no.

There is only so much an instructor can do in a given period of time. It is your job to reinforce what you learned on your own time. If you fall into the bad habit hole it can be hard to climb back up. So let’s nip that in the bud to begin with by PRACTICING. Awesome! Well sort of.

When I started learning to play the bass I hated practicing scales (and still do). Now in my old age I can’t stress enough how beneficial that was for my playing. Another part of practicing is learning new things outside of class but we’ll discuss that in another post. Just like scales to music, the basic is the cornerstone of dancing salsa - not all those fancy moves. If you can perfect this move you can fool any pro.

And Now our Top Ten Practicing Tips

10) Mirror-Mirror

They shouldn’t just be used for your “Hey baby” face – although that can be important. Practice your basic in front of a full length mirror. If you feel awkward you probably look it. Go through the steps slowly. If you can perfect something slowly you will have high success rate when doing it faster. (more…)
